Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Palliative Medicine. This is an additional appointment to join an established Palliative Medicine team, currently consisting of three Consultants. This is an integrated role across both community and acute hospital settings, whilst working collaboratively with two local hospices, St John’s (Lancaster) and St Mary’s (Ulverston).

There is a well-established Clinical Nurse Specialist team which includes Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Non-Medical Prescribers, and which covers both the acute and community settings. We are proud to work alongside our innovative bereavement team, and are fortunate to have excellent administrative support.

There is a strong ethos of multidisciplinary working within the Palliative Care team across the Bay and we work collaboratively with the psychology, chaplaincy and complimentary therapy teams; as well as pharmacy, social work and other allied health care professionals. Morecambe Bay has 9 integrated care communities and we work in partnership with our colleagues in Primary Care. There is a good relationship with the local anaesthetic pain specialists who provide an excellent pain assessment and anaesthetic intervention service.

Morecambe Bay forms part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Palliative and End of Life Network, creating a strong alliance with neighbouring centres.

Lancaster University is the home of the International Observatory on End of Life Care. We continue to build strong relationships with the team there, creating a powerful voice for both clinical and academic palliative care in the area.

The Trust has a keen interest in medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students from Lancaster Medical School receive the whole of their education, academic and clinical, in Cumbria and North Lancashire. The Palliative Care team is actively involved in undergraduate medical training, which includes placements in the 4th year, and support for Special Study Modules. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to support the further development of Palliative Medicine education in this area.

Our department has a workload to keep you interested and challenged, but still give you time to talk to your patients properly, and undertake the practical procedures that interest you as an Acute Physician, which will enhance patient care. The department is staffed with a good skill mix which consists of Consultants, SAS Doctors and Junior Doctors. In addition there is a strong nursing team including an evolving team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners.

This post is  available Full Time 10PA’s up to a maximum of 12PA’s, or Part Time.

In addition, UHMBT has a keen interest and extensive involvement in Medical and Dental Education at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. We work in partnership with Lancaster Medical School, and Health Education North West to provide quality education and training which meets the requirements of these regulatory bodies as well as the Trust’s high standards of patient care. We are looking for a General Radiologist with a specialist interest – the sub speciality is flexible to fit in with the needs of the Trust and the applicant’s interests and we would rather appoint a strong applicant than having a particular requirement for any specific subspecialty.

We invite you to join an established team of 16 Radiologists in providing a comprehensive diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Service for the population of North Lancashire and South Cumbria. We all contribute to the general workload of the department, including CT, US, MRI and plain film reporting and participate in the on call rota (1:16). We outsource on call work from 8 pm (weekdays) and 5 pm (weekend and Bank holidays) to provide a more palatable and sustainable working pattern.

We have good administrative support, highly integrated voice recognition (Dragon 11 Medical with HSS CRIS) and have an active programme to refresh equipment. (Three new CT scanners, three new MR scanners and 16 new USS machines in the last four years). The PACS has been upgraded to a state of the art SECTRA system along with replacement of all the reporting monitors. A new SPECT CT system has been given approval at Furness General Hospital with plans for a similar replacement in nuclear medicine at the Lancaster site.

The Special Care Baby Unit is integrated into the brand new Maternity Unit, South Lakes Birth Centre. It is a Level 1 unit caring for babies born from 32 weeks gestation and has four special care cots plus a dedicated stabilisation facility for sick and preterm babies born at any gestation who are then transferred to a tertiary unit via a dedicated Network Neonatal Transport Team if required. There is also a two-bedded Transitional Care facility for those babies who do not require admission to the Special Care Baby Unit, however require additional support from the Neonatal Team, whilst preventing separation of the babies and their parents.

The Neonatal Unit at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) is a level 2 unit, including 1 intensive care cot, 2 High Dependency cots and 7 Special Care cots.

About the role…

We are able to offer an exciting opportunity for you to join our Occupational Therapy Team based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary as a Specialist Occupational Therapist. You will have a key role in delivering our cardiac rehabilitation programme. The cardiac rehabilitation programme is delivered, over two days during the week and part of your role will be working as a member of this Multidisciplinary team. In addition, you will also hold a specialist caseload across the inpatient team.  The role includes, but is not limited to, working within our inpatient medical team and includes referrals from our Emergency Department. There will also be opportunities to work alongside our Discharge to Assess service.

Clinical experience and expertise in the rehabilitation of patients living with cardiac conditions and how these impact on their daily living is beneficial. Skills and confidence in facilitating group work and delivering education sessions / presentations is desirable as it is a key part in delivering this cardiac rehabilitation programme.  You will also have experience and a broad clinical knowledge base across acute inpatient care, working to facilitate safe and effective care and hospital discharge working on acute medical/surgical wards applying your skills in clinical reasoning within this fast paced environment. Your caseload will be a combination of ward-based work in addition to some community visits and the cardiac rehabilitation programme.

You will continue to develop your clinical knowledge and experience in the assessment, treatment and goal setting with patients presenting with varied physical conditions and will be motivated to join us in improving our patients’ experiences and outcomes.

You will work with a dedicated and motivated team of Occupational Therapists and work closely with colleagues across the Therapies team. You will be supported by a team of Advanced Occupational Therapists, supporting you to continue to develop your specialist knowledge and skills. You will also provide support to team members including Occupational Therapists, Therapy Technical Instructors and students. The Occupational Therapy team operate over a 7 day working arrangement on a rota basis.

Requirements…

  • A Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy approved by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists
  • Registration with HCPC as an Occupational Therapist
  • The ability to travel to patient’s homes in the community to deliver patient assessments within an identified locality

The Radiology department at Furness General Hospital carries out a full range of investigations, including Projectional Imaging, CT, MR, U/S, Fluoroscopy and Radionuclide Imaging with SPECT CT, supporting our busy Emergency Department, Out-patients, In-patients and Theatres. We are equipped with SECTRA PACS and RIS.

We are now looking for an enthusiastic Radiographer to join our friendly CT/MR
team, to undertake a variety of CT and MR examinations efficiently and effectively for
our patients, adhering to best practice of radiographic technique. Working within the
CT and MR department at the FGH provides excellent opportunities to gain experience
in a wide range of CT and MR imaging procedures including trauma, MSK, neurological, vascular, paediatrics and oncology. The department is equipped with one GE 64 slice scanner and one GE 16 slice SPECT CT scanner and one Siemens Aera 1.5T MR scanner undertaking a wide range of MR imaging.

What skills and experience are we looking for?

  • Experience working in an NHS hospital
  • BSc Radiography or equivalent
  • Valid Radiographer registration of the HCPC
  • Previous experience of CT and/or MR scanning
  • Have successfully completed training to undertake IV cannulation desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
  • Expertise to ensure the appropriate triage, booking and examination of
    patients.
  • A high level of professionalism and technical standard of work, complying
    with relevant Codes of Practice. 
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team

Applications will be considered from individuals without prior CT and MR experience as full training can be given.

The CT/MR department currently runs 7 days per week, and staff work full time hours over 4 days, and there is an on call system for CT out of hours.  There is a business case currently out for approval, to consolidate this into a full 24 hour shift system. 

This is a full time, 37.5 hour post but applications from individuals who wish to work
part time hours will also be considered.

The post offers rotations at Alfred Barrow Health Centre, Dalton Clinic and Millom Community Hospital therefore you must have the ability to work and travel to various sites within the Furness Locality. The team has fully equipped clinical areas and gym facilities and  the opportunity to work closely with GPs and other health staff.

We are looking for:

  • A Physiotherapist who has completed a range of core rotations within the NHS as a junior physiotherapist,   including   experience in musculoskeletal out-patients and who is keen to develop their clinical skills further.
  • A motivated individual who can demonstrate evidence of their own professional development.
  • A Team player who can also work independently when necessary.
  • A friendly and flexible attitude, that is patient focused and dedicated to quality care. 
  • Confident IT skills

The Physiotherapy Service has a well-developed appraisal system, regular in-service training, monthly clinical supervision and actively encourages continuing professional development.

You will be expected to be involved in the supervision and teaching of physiotherapy students and other staff within the service.

Anyone newly appointed to the trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period (this includes bank staff). This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the role and working environment.
